Antoine-Jean Gros was a French painter who was born in 1771 in Paris and died in 1835. Much of his
work is neoclassical, but he is also regarded as one of the leading figures in the development of
Romanticism. Under Napoleon, he was the official artist to the army and witnessed some of the most
famous battles of the time. Gros created "Bonaparte visitant les pestiférés de Jaffa" in 1804
during Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign. It shows Napoleon courageously visiting soldiers
whom had been infected by the plague in Syria. It was the first masterpiece of Napoleonic painting.
Another of his masterpieces is "Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau", painted in 1807 after the carnage that took place there. Napoleon
is shown as having compassion for those who had fallen on the battlefield. Gros painted the scene with a degree of realism never
attained in any other Napoleonic history painting.
